TACLOBAN CITY — Five former communist insurgents turned themselves in to police authorities across the Samar provinces this week, according to the Police Regional Office 8 (PRO-8). The surrenderers, identified as former members or supporters of the New People's Army (NPA), relinquished firearms, ammunition, and an explosive device to PRO-8 officials. The coordinated surrenders represent continued efforts by security forces to encourage rebels to abandon the armed struggle and rejoin civilian life. PRO-8 did not immediately provide additional details on the identities of the surrenderers or the specific circumstances of their turnover. The Eastern Visayas region has long been a hotbed of communist insurgent activity, with security operations targeting NPA units operating in remote areas across multiple provinces.
