Five pillars key to building resilient rural enterprises, says official

Rural enterprises can build greater resilience and sustainability by focusing on five core elements, according to senior government officials overseeing rural development initiatives. Amit Shukla, joint secretary in the rural development ministry, highlighted findings from an Indian Institute of Management study that tracked income growth among participating households. The research shows that monthly incomes of beneficiary households under women-focused rural schemes increased by 61 per cent over the past 12 months, demonstrating the effectiveness of targeted rural development programmes. Rohit Kansal, another key figure in rural policy implementation, identified five critical components—commonly referred to as the "five Cs"—that enable rural enterprises to strengthen their operations and withstand economic shocks. While specific details of these five pillars were not elaborated, the framework appears to provide a replicable model for scaling rural income-generation schemes across India's agricultural heartland. Officials suggest that this evidence-based approach could guide policy interventions aimed at strengthening livelihoods in rural communities and fostering sustainable enterprise development beyond current programme beneficiaries.
