Five wood types vulnerable to termite damage, furniture experts warn

When buying sofas, beds or cupboards, Indian consumers often focus on aesthetics and cost, but wood quality plays a crucial role in determining furniture longevity, experts say. Termite damage remains a significant concern in Indian households, particularly in regions with warm, humid climates that favour pest proliferation.

Five wood types have been identified as particularly susceptible to termite attacks. Pine, fir and spruce—softwoods commonly used in budget furniture—are among the most vulnerable. Plywood and particle board, engineered wood products frequently used in ready-made furniture, also present higher risks of infestation due to their composite nature and moisture retention properties.

The rapid deterioration caused by termites can hollow out furniture within months, rendering expensive pieces unusable. Experts recommend examining wood composition and treatment methods before purchase. Furniture treated with anti-termite solutions offers better protection, though the quality and durability of such treatments vary across manufacturers.

Consumers are advised to inquire about wood type and protective treatments when purchasing furniture. Hardwoods like teak and sal offer natural resistance to termites compared to softwoods, though they command premium prices. Regular inspection of furniture and maintaining low moisture levels in homes can also help prevent infestations.
