Flash flood at Grand Canyon forces evacuation of 60+ people

The flash flood struck the Grand Canyon region with little warning, sending large boulders and debris cascading into the Colorado River and forcing a rapid evacuation effort. Emergency responders mobilized quickly to remove more than 60 people from the affected areas as water levels rose dramatically.

The exact cause of the sudden flood surge was not immediately clear, though flash floods are not uncommon in the Grand Canyon during heavy rainfall events. The torrent of water carried substantial debris, including massive rocks and other materials, into the Colorado River below.

Search and rescue operations were underway for approximately 15 people reported missing in the wake of the flooding. Authorities have not yet disclosed the specific locations where the missing individuals were last seen or details about the ongoing search efforts.

The Grand Canyon region attracts thousands of visitors annually, many of whom engage in river rafting, hiking, and camping activities. Flash floods pose a significant hazard in the canyon system, where narrow passages and steep terrain can amplify the danger of sudden water surges.
