Flash floods destroy key bridge in Gua Musang, isolating villagers

GUA MUSANG, Oct 21 — Heavy rains triggered a flash flood in the Gua Musang district that swept away the Pos Brooke suspension bridge, a critical infrastructure link for the rural community of Kampung Brooke Lama. The disaster also saw significant mudflow damage to the surrounding area, compounding the impact on local residents.

The bridge's destruction has effectively isolated villagers from neighbouring settlements and access routes to main towns. Authorities have yet to announce timelines for rebuilding efforts or alternative transport arrangements for affected communities.

The incident marks the latest in a series of flood-related infrastructure failures across the East Coast region, where seasonal monsoons have increasingly strained aging rural infrastructure. Local authorities are expected to assess damage and prioritise restoration work to reconnect the isolated settlement.

Residents have appealed for government assistance to restore connectivity and access to medical facilities, educational institutions, and markets that depend on the now-destroyed bridge crossing.
