Flooding halts traffic on key Akuressa roads after river surge

Heavy rainfall has triggered flooding across several key roads in the Akuressa area, with the Nilwala River reaching minor flood levels on Wednesday. The inundation has created significant traffic disruptions along critical transport routes linking communities in the southern region.

The Kamburupitiya–Mulatiyana Road has been rendered impassable at two locations: Ransegoda and Makandura. Simultaneously, the Akuressa–Kamburupitiya Road has been submerged in the Hondugoda area, forcing commuters to seek alternative routes.

Authorities have not yet issued formal advisories regarding the duration of the closures or peak flood levels expected. Residents and commuters are being urged to avoid the affected areas until water levels recede and road conditions improve. Local officials are monitoring the situation as heavy rains continue across the region.
