Florida approves $35 million bond for regional rail trail development

Voters in Bonita Springs have approved a $35 million bond measure to purchase and transform 5.8 miles of railroad right-of-way into a recreational trail corridor. The investment secures the central section of the Bonita Estero Rail Trail, a project designed to enhance connectivity across Southwest Florida's expanding trail system.

The approved bond will enable local authorities to bridge a significant gap in the Florida Gulf Coast Trail by connecting existing sections in Estero with trail infrastructure in Collier County. Officials have indicated that acquisition of the rail corridor will be completed shortly, with construction activity expected to begin in October.

The initiative represents a substantial commitment to regional recreation and transportation infrastructure. Once completed, the trail segment will provide residents and visitors with an enhanced pathway for walking, cycling, and outdoor recreation while preserving an important transportation corridor for potential future use.
