Florida secures $6.52m deal to protect ex-governor's historic ranch

Florida officials have finalized a conservation easement valued at $6.52 million to safeguard Limestone Creek Ranch from future development, marking a significant step in the state's land preservation efforts. The 1,034-acre property, which formerly operated under gubernatorial ownership, has maintained continuous cattle ranching operations for more than 70 years.

Under the terms of the conservation agreement, the ranch will remain available for ongoing agricultural activities while development rights are permanently restricted. This approach balances economic sustainability with environmental stewardship, allowing the property's traditional ranching operations to continue without jeopardising conservation goals.

The deal forms part of a larger statewide conservation initiative encompassing over 10,770 acres across Florida. State officials have underscored the significance of preserving the state's distinctive ecosystems and agricultural landscapes as pressures from urbanisation continue to mount across the region.

Conservation easements have become an increasingly popular mechanism for landowners and government agencies seeking to protect ecologically important or historically valuable properties. By restricting future development while maintaining current land uses, such arrangements provide a sustainable path forward for land stewardship in rapidly evolving regions.
