Flu-like illness cases surge 35% across Philippines amid rainy season
The Department of Health has reported a significant spike in influenza-like illness cases nationwide, attributing the rise to seasonal patterns typical of the country's wet months. Cases jumped from nearly 10,000 to over 13,000 in a two-week period.

MANILA—The Department of Health documented a sharp 35-percent increase in influenza-like illness (ILI) cases across the Philippines, recording 13,321 patients from September 24 to October 7, compared with 9,896 cases in the preceding two weeks.
The uptick aligns with predictable seasonal trends as the country enters its rainy season, when respiratory infections typically proliferate, according to the health agency's latest Ulat ng Ahensya surveillance report.
The DOH tracks ILI cases through its nationwide disease surveillance system to monitor respiratory illness patterns and detect potential outbreaks. Such monitoring enables the agency to issue timely public health advisories and coordinate response measures across regions.
Health officials typically recommend standard preventive measures during peak respiratory illness seasons, including frequent handwashing, respiratory hygiene, and staying home when sick. The DOH encourages Filipinos experiencing flu-like symptoms to consult healthcare providers for proper evaluation and care.
