FMCG firms brace for margin squeeze as input costs surge

FMCG manufacturers are navigating a challenging cost environment heading into the latter half of the financial year, with input price inflation re-accelerating during the September quarter after a period of relative moderation. The renewed cost pressures have forced companies to absorb portions of the increases rather than passing them fully to consumers, particularly during the festive season when demand elasticity is lower.

Commodity price movements have been uneven across segments, with crude-derived products, packaging materials, palm oil and sugar presenting the most significant headwinds. Industry analysts point to palm oil prices trading approximately 21 per cent higher year-on-year in September, while sugar prices remained about 18 per cent elevated despite witnessing an 8 per cent month-on-month correction, according to Grant Thornton Bharat.

With festive-season demand absorbed, FMCG companies now face a critical juncture as they contemplate post-Diwali price adjustments. The calculus remains delicate in mass-market and rural categories, where consumers demonstrate heightened price sensitivity and limited scope for volume absorption. Any aggressive pricing action risks undermining growth momentum in these segments, which represent critical revenue drivers for many manufacturers.

Industry stakeholders expect margin pressures to persist through the second half of the fiscal year unless commodity prices moderate substantially. Companies are increasingly exploring operational efficiencies and product mix optimization to mitigate impact, while monitoring global commodity trends that could signal further relief or deterioration in the months ahead.
