Food Department pushes to sever ration card link from Ayushman Bharat

The Food Department has formally requested the decoupling of ration card requirements from the Ayushman Bharat Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (PM-JAY), India's flagship health insurance initiative. The department clarified that ration cards have never constituted an official eligibility criterion for beneficiaries seeking to enrol in the health scheme.

The move represents an effort to reduce administrative barriers that may have inadvertently excluded eligible populations from accessing the health coverage programme. Officials noted that the existing eligibility framework for Ayushman Bharat operates independently of the Public Distribution System, which issues and manages ration cards across states.

The clarification assumes significance as ration card possession varies considerably across India's population, with coverage gaps particularly evident in urban areas and certain rural regions. By formally deinking the two systems, the Food Department aims to prevent cases where individuals meeting Ayushman Bharat's actual eligibility parameters might be excluded due to assumptions about ration card linkages.

The department's position aligns with broader efforts to streamline enrolment processes and expand health insurance coverage to all qualifying beneficiaries. State authorities implementing the Ayushman Bharat scheme have been advised to verify eligibility through designated criteria rather than relying on ration card status as a validation mechanism.
