International carriers operating from Mumbai have approached airport authorities with a proposal to consolidate flights by destination during the terminal redevelopment phase, according to industry sources. The request aims to streamline operations as Bombay High-Performance Terminal (BHPT) at Terminal 1 prepares for extensive renovations.

The proposed construction of a north-west pier at Terminal 2 is scheduled to commence in January 2027. This major infrastructure project is expected to impact flight operations and terminal capacity during the execution phase. Airlines operating international routes have sought regulatory clarity on how services will be managed during this period.

Akasa Air, the India-based carrier, announced plans to launch a Mumbai-Jeddah service from Navi Mumbai International Airport (NMIA) beginning December 2026. The expansion represents a strategic addition to the carrier's international network and underscores growing demand for connectivity between India and West Asian markets.

Airport officials are evaluating the airlines' request for destination-based grouping as part of broader contingency planning for the terminal renovation. The move would optimize passenger processing and ground handling while minimizing disruption to scheduled services.

The terminal expansion reflects India's aviation sector growth and the need to enhance capacity at one of the country's busiest airports. Authorities are coordinating with all stakeholders to ensure minimal operational impact during the development phase.
