Foreign investors pull back from India despite robust economic growth

Foreign investors are showing reluctance to deploy fresh capital into India despite the nation maintaining one of the world's fastest growth rates, according to a joint assessment by ratings agencies S&P and Crisil. Net foreign portfolio inflows declined 16.6 per cent during FY26, marking a sharp reversal from earlier trends that had positioned India as a magnet for global capital seeking emerging market exposure.

The cooling in foreign investment flows extends beyond portfolio channels. Net foreign direct investment stood at just $7.8 billion in FY26, a stark contrast to the $94.5 billion in gross inflows recorded during the period. The disparity underscores substantial outflows as multinational corporations repatriated profits and redirected investments toward other markets or their home countries.

Analysts attribute the shift to multiple factors, including elevated valuations in Indian equities, global interest rate dynamics that have made developed markets comparatively attractive, and strategic reallocation decisions by international investors. The trend suggests that India's impressive gross domestic product growth alone is insufficient to sustain the volume of foreign capital inflows witnessed in previous years.

The development poses questions for Indian policymakers about the sustainability of growth trajectories dependent on foreign investment and the currency pressures that net outflows can generate. Experts note that while gross inflows remain substantial, the net position reflects a rebalancing of global investment portfolios away from India in the near term.
