The former chief executive of 1Malaysia Development Berhad has pushed back against suggestions that he treated prominent businessman Jho Low as a de facto leader, stating he maintained appropriate professional boundaries despite using the financier as a conduit for communications.
Shahrol Azral Ibrahim Halmi acknowledged that he had relied on Low as an intermediary to reach then-Prime Minister Najib Razak on matters related to the sovereign wealth fund. However, he stressed that this arrangement did not entail treating Low with the deference or authority one would normally accord to a sitting head of government.
The clarification comes as Malaysia's authorities continue investigations into the massive financial scandal surrounding 1MDB, which has implicated senior government figures and resulted in numerous prosecutions. The fund's collapse in 2015 exposed losses exceeding USD4.5 billion.
Shahrol Azral's statement provides fresh insight into the operational dynamics at 1MDB during the period when Najib served as both Prime Minister and Finance Minister, a combination that critics argued created conflicts of interest and enabled the misappropriation of public funds.
