Additional Sessions Judge Praveen Singh found Hussain guilty under Indian Penal Code Section 147, which covers punishment for rioting, read together with Section 109 on abetment. The verdict came on Saturday in a case stemming from violence that erupted in the Dayalpur area of northeast Delhi during the 2020 riots.
The 12 co-accused—Mohammad Shadab, Shah Alam, Riyasat Ali, Gulfam, Rashid, Mohammad Rihan, Mohammad Abid, Arshad Qayyum, Irshad Ahmed, Deepak Singh Saini, Navneet, and Mehak Singh—were acquitted of all charges. The group faced accusations including rioting, theft in dwelling houses, and mischief involving fire or explosive substances.
The court has scheduled arguments on the quantum of sentence for November 16. This conviction marks another legal development for Hussain, who was previously convicted in July in a separate case related to the 2020 riots that resulted in multiple fatalities and injuries across northeast Delhi.
