Former Baling MP challenges tax authority's decision to cancel RM4.8m settlement

The former Member of Parliament for Baling has mounted a legal challenge against the Inland Revenue Board's decision to cancel a tax settlement worth RM4.8 million, according to court proceedings.

In response to the application for judicial review, the Attorney General's office contended that the former lawmaker filed the request too early in the process. The government's legal representatives argued that the timing of the petition did not meet the procedural requirements for such a challenge at this stage of the tax dispute.

The case centres on the tax authority's reversal of an earlier settlement agreement, a move that has drawn scrutiny from the former politician who contends the decision was improper. The judicial review process will determine whether the Inland Revenue Board acted within its legal authority in cancelling the settlement arrangement.

The proceedings highlight ongoing tensions between taxpayers and revenue authorities over settlement agreements and their enforcement. The outcome of this judicial review could have implications for how similar tax disputes are handled in Malaysia's courts.
