Former Bosnian General Ratko Mladic, Convicted of Genocide, Dies
Ratko Mladic, the former Bosnian Serb military commander convicted of orchestrating some of Europe's worst atrocities since World War II, has died at an advanced age. His death marks the end of a decades-long legal saga that saw him sentenced to life imprisonment for genocide and crimes against humanity.

Mladic, who commanded Bosnian Serb forces during the brutal 1992-1995 war, was convicted by the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia (ICTY) of orchestrating the Srebrenica massacre, in which approximately 8,000 Muslim men and boys were systematically killed. He was also found guilty of crimes against humanity, including persecution, forced deportation, and terrorizing civilian populations across Bosnia and Herzegovina.
The general remained at large for nearly two decades following the war's end, evading capture despite international arrest warrants. He was finally apprehended in 2011 in Serbia and subsequently transferred to The Hague to face trial. In 2017, the ICTY convicted him on 16 of 16 counts and sentenced him to life imprisonment.
Mladic's trial became a symbol of international accountability for mass atrocities, though his case also highlighted deep divisions regarding the Balkan wars. While many in the international community viewed his conviction as a landmark achievement for justice, his legacy remained deeply contentious in Serbia and among Bosnian Serb communities, where some regarded him as a national hero.
His death brings closure to one of the International Criminal Court system's most prominent prosecutions, though the legacy of the Bosnian conflict and its estimated 100,000 deaths continues to shape the region's political landscape.
