Former Bosnian Serb military commander Ratko Mladic dies

Mladic, 81, was serving a life sentence at a United Nations detention facility following his 2017 conviction by the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia. The tribunal found him guilty of overseeing systematic atrocities including the Srebrenica massacre, in which approximately 8,000 Muslim Bosniak men and boys were killed in 1995.

The general had become one of the most prominent faces of Balkan war crimes, with prosecutors arguing he bore direct responsibility for ethnic cleansing campaigns and mass killings throughout Bosnia and Herzegovina during the conflict that claimed roughly 100,000 lives between 1992 and 1995.

Mladic remained a contentious figure in the region, with supporters in Serbia and Bosnian Serb areas viewing his prosecution as politically motivated, while victims' families and international observers regarded his conviction as a landmark moment in post-conflict justice. His death marks the end of a legal process that spanned decades from the war's conclusion to his eventual capture in 2011 and subsequent trial.

The UN tribunal, which has completed most of its cases, was established to prosecute those bearing the greatest responsibility for atrocities committed during the Yugoslav wars of the 1990s.
