Singh took over the leadership position following the resignation of his predecessor Amrinder Singh Raja Warring, with the appointment formalised by the Congress high command on Friday. In his first public statement, Singh expressed gratitude to party leadership, including Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge, the Gandhi family, and Punjab Congress in-charge Sachin Pilot, for the mandate.
"I will work with complete dedication and commitment to strengthen Congress in Punjab and serve the people of our state," Singh said in a statement released on social media.
Singh, who represented Patiala in the Lok Sabha, brings a distinguished sporting legacy to his political role. He captained India's hockey team during the 1992 Barcelona and 1996 Atlanta Olympic Games, establishing himself as a prominent figure in Indian sports history before transitioning to electoral politics.
The appointment marks a significant leadership transition for the Congress party in Punjab, a state where it seeks to rebuild organisational strength and electoral prospects ahead of forthcoming political contests.
