Eight suspects, including former top police official Deshabandu Tennakoon, were formally indicted before Matara High Court Judge Nandana Amarasinghe in relation to the Weligama shooting that occurred on December 31, 2023.
The indictments were served during proceedings held on October 7, with all defendants present before the court. The case marks a significant development in investigations into the incident, which had drawn considerable public attention.
Tennakoon, who previously served as the country's highest-ranking police officer, faces charges alongside the seven co-accused. The Matara High Court will now proceed with the judicial process to determine culpability in the matter.
The case is being heard by Judge Amarasinghe, who will oversee the trial proceedings. The indictments represent a formal acknowledgment that sufficient evidence exists to proceed with prosecution of all eight suspects in connection with the year-end incident.
