Former judge among first witnesses in Duterte impeachment trial

MANILA — Prosecutors preparing their case against Vice President Sara Duterte have selected a former senior magistrate among their first batch of witnesses for the second article of impeachment charges, according to statements from the prosecution panel.

Amparo Cabotaje-Tang, a retired Sandiganbayan presiding justice, will testify as part of the prosecution's strategy to build its evidence for Article II of the Articles of Impeachment. Bicol Saro party-list Rep. Terry Ridon disclosed the witness list during a press conference on Thursday.

Cabotaje-Tang is expected to be among three initial witnesses called to the stand as the prosecution begins presenting its case. The selection of a respected jurist with experience in the specialized court that handles plunder and graft cases signals the prosecution's intent to establish credibility in its allegations.

The impeachment proceedings against the Vice President continue to draw significant political attention, with both the prosecution and defense preparing their respective cases. The testimony from Cabotaje-Tang and other witnesses will form part of the factual foundation for Article II charges.
