Former Kedah aide ordered to defend rare earth bribery charges

Sessions Court Judge Suzana Hussin ruled that the prosecution has established a prima facie case against Hilmi Abdul Wahab, paving the way for the defence to present its arguments. The determination means the prosecution has presented enough evidence linking the accused to the charges to warrant proceeding to the defence stage of the trial.

Hilmi, who previously served as an aide to the Kedah Menteri Besar, faces allegations related to bribery involving rare earth elements. The case has drawn attention given the sensitivity surrounding rare earth minerals and their strategic importance to Malaysia's industrial sector.

With the court's finding, Hilmi is now required to enter his defence, allowing his legal team to present evidence and arguments to counter the prosecution's case. The ruling represents standard court procedure in Malaysian criminal trials, where the prosecution must first demonstrate sufficient prima facie evidence before the defence stage commences.

The case continues to develop as proceedings advance to the next phase of the trial.
