The court's decision came after the prosecution concluded its case against Hilmi, marking a significant development in the ongoing investigation into potential misconduct surrounding REE mining activities in the state. The ordering of the defence phase indicates the court found sufficient evidence to proceed with the case against the former political aide.
The case has drawn public attention given Hilmi's close association with the state's executive leadership and the sensitive nature of rare earth element mining operations, which have been the subject of environmental and developmental concerns in Malaysia.
Hilmi's defence will now be presented before the court, where he will have the opportunity to respond to the allegations levelled against him. The outcome of this case could have implications for governance and accountability standards among political appointees in state administrations across Malaysia.
Rare earth element mining has been a contentious issue in several Malaysian states, with stakeholders raising concerns about environmental impact and regulatory oversight. This case underscores ongoing efforts by authorities to investigate potential irregularities in the sector.
