Former Ladakh BJP MP disputes civil society claims over dialogue with Centre

Chhewang Rigzin, the former BJP Member of Parliament from Ladakh, has pushed back against criticism from prominent activist groups regarding recent high-level talks with New Delhi, claiming the September 9 dialogue between Ladakh civil society representatives, the Ministry of Home Affairs, and the union territory administration was "fruitful."

In contrast, organizations including the Ladakh Apex Body and the Kargil Democratic Alliance have characterized the same meeting as disappointing, suggesting minimal tangible outcomes emerged from the engagement. The competing narratives underscore growing fissures within Ladakh's civil society leadership over strategy and expectations in dealings with federal authorities.

Rigzin attributed ongoing delays in addressing Ladakh's pending demands to disagreements and coordination challenges among civil society groups themselves, rather than reluctance or obstruction from the Ministry of Home Affairs or the union territory administration. He suggested that fractured civil society messaging has hampered the effectiveness of engagement with New Delhi.

The dispute reflects broader tensions within Ladakh's activist ecosystem regarding how best to advance the region's interests following its separation from Jammu and Kashmir in 2019.
