Former Malaysian Religious Affairs Minister Charged Over RM860 Million Fund Misappropriation

Jamil Khir Baharom, the former Minister of Religious Affairs, has been charged with criminal breach of trust and misappropriation of funds totalling RM860 million from Tabung Haji, the Malaysian pilgrimage savings fund.

According to the prosecution, the former minister allegedly diverted the substantial sum to Al-Rawda Real Estate Development And Projects Management Co. Ltd., a private company. The charges suggest a systematic scheme to redirect public funds designated for pilgrims' savings into unauthorized channels.

Tabung Haji, established to assist Malaysian Muslims in saving for the Hajj pilgrimage, manages billions of ringgit in deposits from contributors nationwide. The alleged misappropriation represents a significant breach of the institution's fiduciary responsibilities and public trust.
