Former Minister in the Prime Minister's Department Jamil Khir Baharom has defended Tabung Haji's hotel leasing strategy, stating it was intended to lower costs for Malaysian pilgrims performing the haj. Khir made the statement after being charged in connection with the hajj fund's property transactions.
The long-term leasing arrangement with hotels was aimed at locking in competitive accommodation rates, Khir explained, emphasizing that the strategy was designed with pilgrims' financial interests in mind. He argued that securing fixed rates through extended leasing contracts would provide stability and cost savings across multiple haj seasons.
Tabung Haji, Malaysia's pilgrimage savings fund, has faced intense scrutiny over its property investments and financial management in recent years. The charges against Khir represent part of broader investigations into the fund's handling of billions of ringgit in pilgrim contributions.
