A former Olympic swimming coach has been sentenced to more than 15 years in prison after being convicted of serious sexual offences against minors. George Gibney was found guilty of 39 counts of indecent assault and one attempted rape charge, all involving incidents between 1971 and 1981.

Gibney was extradited from the United States last year to stand trial in his home country. The conviction follows a lengthy legal process that culminated in the guilty verdicts being delivered earlier this year, marking a significant conclusion to a case spanning multiple decades.

The sentencing reflects the serious nature of the offences, which targeted vulnerable children during the coach's tenure in a position of authority and trust within the sporting environment. The case underscores ongoing efforts to hold individuals accountable for historical abuse, even when significant time has elapsed since the crimes were committed.

The conviction and sentencing are expected to send a strong message regarding the prosecution of historical child sexual abuse cases and the commitment to justice for victims, regardless of the passage of time or the offender's subsequent relocation abroad.
