Former Olympic Hockey Captain Pargt Singh Appointed Punjab Congress Chief

Pargt Singh, who captained India's hockey contingent at two consecutive Olympic Games, has been elevated to lead the Congress party's organizational machinery in Punjab. Singh represented India across three Olympic cycles and served as captain during the 1992 Barcelona and 1996 Atlanta Games, establishing himself as one of the country's notable sporting figures.

Singh's transition to electoral politics began in 2012 when he successfully contested the Jalandhar Cantonment assembly seat on the Shiromani Akali Dal ticket. He subsequently switched allegiance to the Indian National Congress and was re-elected from the same constituency under the party banner, consolidating his base in the region.

The appointment marks a strategic move by the Congress to bolster its organizational presence in Punjab, traditionally a stronghold where the party has faced intensifying competition from the Aam Aadmi Party and regional players. Singh's appointment comes as the party seeks to rebuild its ground-level presence ahead of state electoral challenges.

As head of the Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee, Singh will oversee the party's day-to-day operations, membership drives, and coordination with state legislators across the state. His dual background spanning Olympic achievement and legislative experience positions him as a visible face for the party's revival efforts in the region.
