Lee Yiok Seng, a veteran politician who played a significant role in Singapore's housing initiatives during his parliamentary career, died on Tuesday. He was 87.
Lee served as Member of Parliament for Bukit Panjang from 1972 to 1991, before moving to represent Sembawang GRC from 1991 until 1996. During his tenure, he held the position of Senior Parliamentary Secretary and was instrumental in efforts to expand and develop Singapore's public housing sector.
His work during the 1970s and 1980s coincided with a critical period in Singapore's nation-building, when the government prioritised providing affordable housing for its growing population. Lee's contributions to housing policy reflected the priorities of that era, as the Housing and Development Board expanded its programmes across the island.
Lee's parliamentary career spanned nearly a quarter-century, during which he represented constituents across two distinct electoral divisions. His passing marks the end of a chapter in Singapore's political history during the country's formative decades of rapid development and urbanisation.
