Former Puttalam councillor arrested in major cannabis seizure operation

The former councillor, identified as Nakuleshwaran, was apprehended during a search operation conducted in Thilladiya on October 18, following intelligence gathered by the Police Narcotics Bureau. Officers acting on a tip-off regarding the suspect's involvement in transporting cannabis from Kerala launched the enforcement action that led to the arrest.

The seizure represents a notable success for the PNB's ongoing efforts to combat drug trafficking in the Western Province. Authorities have not yet disclosed the exact quantity of cannabis recovered during the operation or the estimated street value of the consignment.

The arrest underscores concerns about the use of local political figures in facilitating drug distribution networks. Investigators are examining whether additional individuals were involved in the trafficking operation and whether further arrests are anticipated.

The suspect has been taken into custody for questioning and is expected to face charges under Sri Lanka's drug control legislation. The Police Narcotics Bureau has intensified operations targeting cross-border smuggling routes used to transport narcotic substances into the country.
