Former Senate Chief Denies Sedition Charges in Royal Row Case
Tan Sri Dr Rais Yatim entered a not guilty plea to sedition charges connected to a constitutional crisis in Negeri Sembilan. The former Dewan Negara president appeared before the High Court in Kuala Lumpur on Wednesday.

The 83-year-old former statesman faced charges under the Sedition Act 1948 related to statements allegedly made during political turmoil involving the Negeri Sembilan palace earlier this year. He arrived at the courthouse accompanied by his legal team to formally enter his plea.
The charge carries potential penalties including fines and imprisonment if he is found guilty. The case centres on remarks that prosecutors contend were intended to stir up discontent against lawful authority.
Rais Yatim, who served as Dewan Negara president until 2019, has maintained his position that any public statements he made were made in good faith and within the bounds of legitimate discourse. His legal representatives are expected to present submissions addressing the substantive legal arguments surrounding the charge.
The High Court will determine the course of proceedings, with further hearing dates likely to be scheduled as the case progresses through the judicial system.
