Former TH executive seeks to overturn RM170,477 graft conviction

A former senior executive at Tabung Haji has filed an application to set aside his graft conviction, according to court documents filed in relation to the case.

Zaharuddin Hamid was found guilty in 2023 of soliciting and accepting bribes totalling RM170,477. Prosecutors alleged that he received the illicit payments in exchange for using his influence to help a construction firm secure contracts with the Islamic pilgrimage fund management body.

The appeal represents a continuation of legal proceedings that have drawn scrutiny to governance practices within Tabung Haji, one of Malaysia's largest state-owned institutions responsible for managing funds for Muslim pilgrims undertaking the hajj.

Details of the specific grounds for Zaharuddin's appeal have not been disclosed. The case underscores ongoing efforts by Malaysian authorities to combat corruption within government-linked companies and public institutions.
