Former Vineyard Transformed into Sanctuary for Endangered Parrots

Tony and Cherie Townsend stepped away from viticulture to pursue an ambitious environmental restoration project on their property, replanting the former vineyard with native vegetation to create suitable habitat for regent parrots, a species facing severe population decline. The initiative has evolved into a multi-generational family endeavour, with volunteers spanning four generations participating in planting efforts and ongoing conservation work.

Since the restoration began, over 3,000 native seedlings have been established across the site, recreating the ecological conditions necessary for the parrots to thrive. The project reflects broader recognition of the critical role private landholdings play in biodiversity conservation, particularly as natural habitats continue to fragment across the region.

The Murraylands and Riverland Landscape Board has provided backing for the scheme, underscoring official support for community-led conservation initiatives. Local volunteers have supplemented the family's efforts, contributing labour and expertise to accelerate the habitat restoration process. The project demonstrates how departing from conventional agricultural practices can yield significant environmental benefits while engaging entire communities in species protection.

Regent parrot populations have declined sharply over recent decades due to habitat loss and degradation. Private conservation initiatives like the Townsend family's project are increasingly viewed as essential components of broader strategies to reverse population trends and restore viable populations of Australia's threatened avifauna.
