CALAPAN CITY — Officials in the Occidental Mindoro municipality of Mamburao conducted a shoreline inspection in Barangay Talabaan Proper on Sunday, Oct. 4, responding to complaints from residents about a foul odor affecting the area.
The unpleasant smell had persisted for approximately two weeks before prompting the municipal response. Residents attributed the onset of the odor to the extended rainfall associated with the southwest monsoon season, which had deluged the region in recent weeks.
The inspection was aimed at identifying the source of the odor and determining whether environmental or health concerns posed a risk to the coastal community. Municipal officials did not immediately disclose preliminary findings from the inspection or indicate what measures, if any, would be taken to address the issue.
The incident underscores ongoing challenges faced by coastal communities in the Philippines during the monsoon season, when heavy rainfall can trigger water quality issues and environmental concerns in shoreline areas.
