Four police personnel from Ayodhya were arrested in Rajasthan after attempting to collect a bribe from a resident facing cyber fraud charges, authorities said. The officers allegedly approached the victim with threats of imprisonment unless a payment of 2.80 lakh rupees was made, according to police records.
The extortion scheme unfolded after the victim reported a cyber fraud case to Ayodhya police. Rather than pursuing the complaint through proper channels, the officers allegedly demanded money to prevent the victim's arrest and prosecution. Negotiations resulted in an agreed sum of 2.80 lakh rupees, significantly less than the initial 4 lakh rupee demand.
The Ayodhya police team traveled to Sikar in Rajasthan to collect the agreed payment, where they were apprehended by local authorities. The arrested officers have been suspended pending further investigation into the corruption charges. The case highlights ongoing concerns about police misconduct and extortion schemes targeting crime victims in the region.
