Four-decade-old land investment secures vast Canadian forest reserve
A woman's decision to invest her grandmother's legacy over 40 years ago has resulted in the permanent conservation of 140 acres of forest on Lasqueti Island in Canada. The protected land now forms part of a connected reserve exceeding 1,000 acres in the Salish Sea region.

Domena Diesing's investment decision from 1981 has culminated in a significant conservation achievement for Lasqueti Island off the coast of British Columbia. By leveraging her grandmother's legacy, Diesing worked to secure permanent protection for 140 acres of pristine forest habitat, transforming what began as a personal financial commitment into a landmark environmental initiative.
The conservation effort was realised through a partnership with the BC Parks Foundation, which helped facilitate the formal protection of the land. This collaboration ensured that the acreage would maintain permanent conservation status, preventing future development or resource extraction on the property.
The protected land now contributes to a far more expansive conservation network. The connected reserve system now encompasses more than 1,000 acres across the Salish Sea, creating a substantial ecological corridor for wildlife and coastal habitat preservation.
The project also honours the environmental legacy of Alfred Gaensbauer, whose long-term dedication to conservation efforts influenced the initiative. Diesing's decision to invest in land protection demonstrates how individual actions, combined with institutional partnerships, can generate enduring environmental benefits across decades.
