Polling commenced today for Legislative Council seats in four major Indian states, with Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, Karnataka and Maharashtra conducting elections through graduate and teacher electoral colleges. Bihar is conducting elections for eight seats, while Uttar Pradesh has the highest number of contested seats at eleven. Karnataka and Maharashtra are holding elections for four and five seats respectively.
The voting is taking place through designated constituencies comprised of graduate voters and educators who form the electoral base for these upper house positions. These indirect election methods have long been a feature of state Legislative Councils across India, allowing specialized voter groups to select representatives.
The results of today's polling will determine the composition of the upper chambers in these states. Legislative Councils play an important advisory and legislative role in state assemblies, with members serving fixed terms. The elections are being conducted according to established electoral procedures and protocols set by election authorities in each state.
