Four suspended over surgical negligence at Kakinada teaching hospital

The suspension was ordered after an internal inquiry confirmed that a cannula—a thin medical tube—remained lodged in the patient's abdomen following her caesarean delivery. The patient was subsequently readmitted to the facility with complaints of stomach pain, leading to the discovery of the retained foreign object and its removal during emergency intervention.

Rangaraya Medical College Principal confirmed the findings, stating that the incident represented a clear breach of surgical protocols and patient safety standards. The college initiated disciplinary action against the four staff members involved in the surgical procedure, including the two assistant professors overseeing the operation and the postgraduate students assisting during the delivery.

The incident highlights ongoing concerns about medical oversight and protocol adherence in teaching hospital settings. While the patient's condition following the removal of the cannula has not been detailed, retained foreign bodies during surgery remain a preventable complication that can pose serious health risks.

The suspension marks part of a broader accountability process at the institution. Rangaraya Medical College has not indicated whether the case will be referred to medical regulatory authorities for further investigation or disciplinary proceedings.
