A cleaning operation at Shri Ganga Hotel on the Ujjain-Dewas road turned tragic on Monday when four workers died in what authorities believe was a suffocation incident. The incident unfolded after two workers entered a food-waste tank to conduct routine cleaning and maintenance work.
Both workers collapsed inside the chamber shortly after entry. Upon discovering their colleagues unresponsive, two additional workers immediately entered the tank in an attempt to rescue them. However, all four men lost consciousness and subsequently died, according to preliminary reports from local authorities.
The exact cause of death is suspected to be asphyxiation, though a formal investigation into the circumstances is underway. Officials have not yet confirmed whether toxic gases, oxygen depletion, or other hazardous conditions within the waste chamber were responsible for the fatalities.
The incident highlights ongoing safety concerns in India's hospitality and maintenance sectors, where workers frequently enter confined spaces with inadequate protective equipment or safety protocols. Authorities in Ujjain have launched an inquiry into the incident and are examining whether the hotel management followed mandatory safety guidelines for such operations.
