Fourth Randoli Perahera illuminates Kandy streets during Esala Festival

The fourth Randoli Perahera of the Kandy Esala Perahera proceeded through the city's main thoroughfares, drawing spectators to witness the spectacle of decorated elephants, drumming ensembles, and traditional dancers moving through the illuminated streets.

The Randoli Perahera forms part of the Esala Festival's nightly processions, which showcase Sri Lanka's rich Buddhist heritage and cultural traditions. Each evening's parade features elaborately caparisoned tuskers, including those bearing sacred regalia, alongside performers in traditional attire who maintain rhythmic cadences with drums and other instruments.

The festival, held annually in August, centers on veneration of the Buddha's Tooth Relic, believed to be housed in the Temple of the Tooth in Kandy. The multi-week celebration draws devotees and tourists alike, with the successive Peraheras building in scale and grandeur as the festival progresses toward its culmination.
