A major financial fraud has come to light involving scammers impersonating officials of a prominent payments body to swindle a victim of Rs 1.46 crore. The accused perpetrated the scheme over an extended period, targeting the victim between September 5, 2024 and August 11 of the current year, spanning almost a year of deception.
According to police investigations, the fraudsters approached the victim with carefully crafted promises. They assured the targeted individual of securing a refund of his insurance policy premium while simultaneously guaranteeing high financial returns on the investment. The dual assurance appears to have been a deliberate strategy to build trust and extract substantial sums from the victim.
The modus operandi employed by the accused reflects an increasing trend of sophisticated financial crimes targeting ordinary citizens. By leveraging the credibility of established financial institutions and payment bodies, the scammers exploited the victim's trust in legitimate regulatory authorities. The case underscores the growing menace of impersonation frauds in the financial sector.
Authorities have registered cases against the accused and launched investigations to trace the money trail and identify other potential victims. The incident serves as a cautionary reminder for citizens to verify the authenticity of officials before sharing sensitive financial information or engaging in monetary transactions.
