French court overturns Paris protest ban as unrest grips nation
An administrative court in Paris has overturned a police-imposed ban on demonstrations, allowing thousands to gather Thursday even as other French cities maintain restrictions following weekend violence that saw masked youth clash with officers and loot businesses.

Thousands of protesters assembled peacefully in southeastern Paris on Thursday after local courts ruled against authorities' attempt to prohibit the gathering. The Paris prefecture had initially banned the demonstration, citing safety concerns following three days of intense civil unrest marked by clashes between police and groups of masked youths, widespread looting of shops, and vehicles set ablaze across the capital.
The administrative court's decision to lift the ban came after protest organisers challenged the police order. Under an agreement signed with law enforcement, demonstrators agreed to keep the protest stationary to mitigate risks of further violence. Heavy police presence was deployed throughout the demonstration area as participants, many of them young people, gathered to voice their concerns.
Protest signs reflected growing frustration about the nation's trajectory, with one banner reading: "We don't need tear gas for our future to look bleak." The Paris demonstration proceeded without major incident, though officials signalled that additional protest bans would likely be imposed in other French cities in the coming days as authorities attempt to restore order following the weekend's violent clashes.
