FSSAI charts year-long timeline for front-of-pack nutrition labels

The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India has unveiled its approach to implementing front-of-pack nutrition labelling, proposing a unified rollout period rather than a phased implementation. The proposal grants food and beverage manufacturers a full year to voluntarily comply with the new labelling requirements, providing industry stakeholders with a defined timeline for adaptation.

Under the proposed framework, products that exceed prescribed thresholds for sodium, added sugars and saturated fats will be required to display prominent red warnings on their packaging. The colour-coded warning system is designed to help consumers quickly identify products with elevated levels of these nutrients, enabling more informed purchasing decisions at the point of sale.

The single-phase approach represents a departure from more granular implementation strategies, streamlining the transition process for manufacturers across India's diverse food industry. By establishing a 365-day voluntary compliance window, the FSSAI aims to balance consumer health objectives with the operational requirements of food producers ranging from large multinational corporations to small-scale domestic manufacturers.

The initiative aligns with global trends toward transparent front-of-pack labelling systems, with countries across South Asia and beyond adopting similar measures to address rising rates of diet-related non-communicable diseases. Industry observers will be monitoring the FSSAI's final notification and whether the proposed timeline remains unchanged following the consultation period.
