FSSAI cracks down on 150 food firms over misleading claims

The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has intensified its regulatory oversight of the food industry, issuing more than 150 notices to companies for breaches of advertising standards and compliance failures in recent months.

The notices cover violations including misleading advertisements, unsubstantiated health claims and non-compliance with mandatory labelling requirements. The regulator's action has ensnared both multinational corporations and major domestic players across the food and beverage sector.

Among the companies against which action has been initiated are Nestle India, PepsiCo India, Coca-Cola India, Abbott India, Red Bull India, Danone India, Monster Energy India, Hell Energy, Mondelez India, Diageo, Pernod Ricard, Ferrero India and Kenvue Inc. The list reflects the regulator's focus on enforcement across diverse product categories ranging from packaged foods to energy drinks and spirits.

The FSSAI's enforcement drive underscores growing regulatory scrutiny of food business operators in India. The authority has signalled its commitment to protecting consumer interests by ensuring companies adhere to labelling standards and refrain from making unsubstantiated claims about their products' nutritional or health benefits.

The notices represent part of a broader regulatory push to standardise practices across India's food industry and prevent consumers from being misled by misleading marketing claims.
