FSSAI cracks down on food safety violations, seizes 3,280 tonnes

The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has intensified its crackdown on food safety violations, confiscating 3,280 tonnes of food products valued at ₹818 million during recent inspections. The enforcement sweep also resulted in the suspension of 1,133 operating licences across the country.

The regulator's compliance operation covered 56,431 food establishments, examining their adherence to food safety standards and hygiene protocols. Beyond the seizures and licence suspensions, FSSAI issued 10,047 improvement notices to operators found to be in breach of regulatory requirements, giving them an opportunity to rectify deficiencies.

The action reflects FSSAI's ongoing efforts to tighten oversight of the food supply chain and protect consumers from contaminated or adulterated products. The scale of the operation underscores the persistence of food safety concerns across retail, manufacturing, and distribution sectors in India.

The regulator has prioritized inspections of establishments selling perishable items, packaged foods, and ready-to-eat products, which pose higher health risks if improperly stored or handled. Industry observers note that such enforcement drives typically lead to temporary compliance improvements, though sustained vigilance remains necessary to maintain standards.
