The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has concluded a major nationwide enforcement drive that resulted in significant regulatory action against food businesses found operating in violation of safety standards. Between September 1 and November 5, the authority inspected 56,431 food establishments across the country as part of the coordinated compliance initiative.
The regulator seized a substantial quantity of substandard food items during the period, with confiscations totalling 3,280 tonnes. Products targeted in the crackdown included paneer, ghee, milk, and prepared sweets—items commonly consumed across Indian households. The seizures underscore the FSSAI's focus on ensuring that widely-consumed dairy and food products meet stipulated quality benchmarks.
Beyond product seizures, the enforcement action extended to formal regulatory measures against non-compliant operators. The FSSAI cancelled 52 food business licences, removing establishments deemed unable or unwilling to comply with prescribed safety protocols from active operation.
The enforcement drive reflects the regulator's commitment to maintaining food safety standards in a market where adulteration and non-compliance remain persistent challenges. The scale of inspections and subsequent action signals intensified monitoring across the food manufacturing and distribution chain in India.
