FSSAI plans red warning labels for high-fat, high-sugar foods

The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has unveiled a proposal for prominent red-coloured pictorial warnings on the front of food packages containing elevated levels of nutrients considered harmful to health. The initiative targets products with high concentrations of fat, sugar and sodium, providing consumers with immediate visual cues about potential health risks.

According to an affidavit filed by FSSAI in the Supreme Court, the warning system is designed to be simple, prominent and easily understood by shoppers of varying literacy levels. The pictorial format ensures that the message reaches consumers quickly without requiring them to interpret complex nutritional data on package labels.

The proposal represents a significant step toward reducing diet-related diseases in India, where processed food consumption has risen sharply in urban and semi-urban areas. Health advocates have long pushed for such measures, arguing that clearer labelling can influence purchasing decisions and encourage manufacturers to reformulate their products with lower levels of problematic ingredients.

The FSSAI's submission to the Supreme Court indicates that the regulatory framework is advancing toward mandatory implementation. If approved, the red warning labels would join existing nutritional information requirements, creating a multi-layered approach to food transparency in the Indian market.
