FSSAI ramps up food safety inspections ahead of festive shopping season

The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has issued a directive to strengthen food safety enforcement nationwide as consumers prepare for the festive season shopping rush. The move aims to prevent the distribution of substandard and adulterated food products that typically see increased demand during celebrations.

Under the new operational framework, FSSAI will deploy Food Safety on Wheels (FSWs)—equipped mobile laboratories capable of conducting on-site food testing—across prominent retail markets and commercial hubs. These units will enable rapid detection of contamination and quality violations, allowing authorities to intervene before unsafe products reach consumers.

The regulatory push comes as festivals traditionally witness a surge in food consumption and purchasing activity. Markets, street vendors, and retail outlets are expected to be priority focus areas for inspections. The FSSAI has directed its field teams to conduct heightened surveillance of processed foods, spices, dairy products, and ready-to-eat items commonly consumed during festive periods.

Authorities will cross-check compliance with food safety standards and take action against violators. The intensified crackdown seeks to protect public health while ensuring consumer confidence in the food supply chain during peak festive demand.
