Fuel supply crisis looms in Meghalaya as union threatens halt
The North-East Petroleum Mazdoor Union has threatened to suspend fuel transportation from Assam to Meghalaya over safety concerns. The threat has triggered panic buying at petrol pumps across Shillong.

Motorists and traders rushed to fuel stations across Shillong on Friday following an announcement by the North-East Petroleum Mazdoor Union (NEPMZ) that it would halt the movement of petrol, diesel, and liquefied petroleum gas from Assam to Meghalaya. The union cited safety concerns affecting workers transporting fuel in Assam-registered vehicles as the reason for the threatened suspension.
The standoff has created anxiety among consumers in the hill state, which relies heavily on fuel supplies transported through Assam. Long queues formed at petrol pumps as residents sought to stock up on fuel ahead of any potential disruption to supplies. Retailers also reported increased demand across the state.
The union's concerns center on the safety of workers and the conditions under which fuel is transported across state lines. The threat represents a significant challenge to Meghalaya's energy security, as alternative supply routes remain limited. State authorities have not yet issued an official response to the union's ultimatum.
The potential fuel shortage comes at a time when the region is already grappling with supply chain challenges. If the union proceeds with the suspension, it could have cascading effects on transportation, commerce, and essential services across Meghalaya and potentially other northeastern states dependent on similar supply chains.
