A decades-long manhunt in Uttar Pradesh came to an unexpected end when police used social media to apprehend a suspect who had evaded capture for four decades. The man, accused of theft in Kanpur in 1986, had disappeared and eventually settled in Bareilly, where he assumed a new identity as a sadhu, or wandering monk.
Police investigators, reviewing old case files and cross-referencing them with modern digital tools, discovered the suspect's Facebook account. By analyzing his friends list and online activity, officers were able to locate him at an ashram in Bareilly, where he had been living under an assumed spiritual identity.
When confronted and asked if he maintained a Facebook account, the suspect reportedly confirmed he did. Following his admission, police arrested him at the ashram and brought him into custody. The case highlights the growing use of digital forensics and social media intelligence in tracking long-missing criminal suspects across India.
The arrest marks a significant development in a theft case that had gone cold for four decades, demonstrating how conventional investigative methods combined with modern technology can overcome significant time gaps in criminal cases.
